No more fighting! Suddenly announced: ceasefire!

2025.05.15

Soon after the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement broke out in October 2023, the Houthis began to attack Israeli ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and later expanded to American and British ships.
To ensure transportation safety, most shipping companies have to go around the Cape of Good Hope, which prolongs transportation time and increases operating costs.

According to Maersk, if the container shipping industry reuses the Suez Canal and no longer needs to take the long route around southern Africa, about 1 million to 2 million TEUs of shipping capacity will be released.
According to the shipping association BIMCO, 10% of global shipping capacity has been absorbed by long-distance shipping that bypasses the route.
The interruption of the Red Sea route has extended the voyage of the Asia-Europe route by 10 to 15 days, the shipping schedule fluctuates frequently, and the transportation cost has risen significantly; the detour around the Cape of Good Hope has made ship scheduling more tense, and global ports have experienced congestion, liner delays and other multiple problems.

As early as the beginning of the year when Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement, shipping giants said that there was no plan to return to the Suez Canal and Red Sea routes in the short term. They stressed that they would not consider returning to the Suez Canal and Red Sea until the Red Sea region was completely safe. Other companies mentioned that only when insurance companies reclassified the relevant areas as safe areas could ships return.

Although Trump told the media that the Yemeni Houthi armed forces have agreed to stop threatening the safety of navigation in the Middle East waters, and on this basis the United States will stop bombing the Houthi armed forces, the Houthi armed forces have not yet officially confirmed the ceasefire agreement. The New York Post quoted an anonymous US official as saying that the ceasefire agreement mainly covers the "non-attack" arrangement between the United States and Houthi forces, and does not cover the shipping targets of Israel or other countries.

This means that even if the safety of US ships is initially guaranteed, it remains to be seen whether the overall safety situation in the Red Sea has really improved.

In recent years, after experiencing "black swan events" such as the epidemic, the blockage of the Suez Canal, and the Red Sea crisis, the global industrial chain and supply chain have undergone in-depth adjustments, and the mentality of large shippers and shipping companies has also quietly changed, gradually shifting from pursuing transportation timeliness to paying more attention to the stability, reliability, and sustainability of the supply chain.
